Pokapū Championships2024

The entry numbers were disappointingly low considering all the work that goes into an event like this and the high quality of the courses. However, we all had a great time.

Competitors came from Taranaki, Bay of Plenty, Wairarapa, Wellington, Hutt Vally and Taupo as well as Hawkes Bay and Red Kiwis.

The first day was a Sprint event held at Havelock North High and Intermediate Schools.  We enjoyed a fast and furious run around the schools buildings and fields, including a pivot control which was also a spectator control, and also a map flip for some of us.

Notable RK results included a first out of 2 in W10, 3rd and 4th/6 in M12, 5th and 6th/7 in W60A and 4th/8 in M70A.

The second day was the Middle Distance event at Springvale out near Tikokino. The course was on a farm with creeks twisting away in the valleys, with lots of changes of direction and decision making. Notable was the swifter knee-deep stream which we all had to cross to get to the start. An extra bit of adventure. Some of the smaller competitors were carried over.

Notable RK results included 1st/6 in M14A, 1st and 3rd/4 in M12A, 1st in W10, 2nd/5 in W40A, 3rd/8 in W60A and 2nd/10 in M70A.

The last day was the sunny and very muddy long distance at Hautope, out from Waikawau and over the Tukituki River. A farm with big rolling hills, lots of fences to climb, streams to follow and fabulous views.

We had a 2nd/6 in W21A, 2nd/6 in W16A, 2nd/4 in M14A, 1st/2 in both M10 and W10, 1st/3in W40A and 3rd/8 in W60A amongst our best results.
