This is a training day for White and Yellow courses with an introduction to contours.
Costs of $5 per person or $10 maximum per family to cover material costs.
The Foxton Beach Boys Brigade wil be the training base for using their toilets and the cover if showers are forecast. If it is forecast to rain, the event will be postponed to a later date.
Learning the basics of orienteering for white (easy), yellow (slightly harder) to some aspects of orange level (contours).
The aim of the day is to introduce new orienteers to forest maps at a beginner’s level. The items that are marked on the map will be covered and pointed out on a couple of walks through the forest and sand dunes. These walks are to help people read both from the map to the land features and visa versa. To navigate in a forest the important hand rails available will be identified and reading contours will be covered. The major features described by contours will also be pointed out on our map walks.
There will be book and practical exercises to complete. Total time will be 3 to 4 hours starting at 10:30 am on Sunday 15 September. We will have a lunch break around 12:30 pm depending on how the morning exercises pan out.
There will be a short white and a short yellow course for people to finish up with. If the demand is there, I will have a short orange course planned that could be used. Part of the exercise will be for some of the people to put out the controls while other people then do the course.
